  1. Krishnadevaraya was an emperor of the Vijayanagara Empire. He became the dominant ruler of the peninsula of India. He patronised poets and scholars in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Sanskrit.

 

  1. The Ashta Pradhan was a council of eight ministers that administered the Maratha empire under the rule of Shivaji. The body discharged the functions of a modern council of ministers.

 

  1. The Third Buddhist council was convened in about 250 BCE at Pataliputra, under the patronage of Emperor Ashoka. It was presided over by the elder monk Moggaliputta-Tissa.  Its objective was to purify the Buddhist movement, particularly from opportunistic factions which had been attracted by the royal patronage. Tripitaka were formalized in this council. It was also decided to send emissaries to various countries in order to spread Buddhism.

 

  1. The Alvars were Tamil poet-saints of South India who espoused bhakti (devotion) to the Hindu god Vishnu or his avatar Krishna. The collection of their hymns is known as Divya Prabandha. They are venerated especially in Vaishnavism. They were a group of 12.

The Nayanars were a group of 63 saints in the 6th to 8th century who were devoted to the Hindu god Shiva in Tamil Nadu. The collection of their hymns is called Tirumurai.
