Uttar Pradesh has a large network of historical cities, pilgrimage centres, industrial towns and agricultural markets. Its major rivers have shaped settlement, transport, irrigation, religious traditions and economic activity. For UPPCS Prelims, it is important to connect a place with its district, river, historical significance, industry and geographical location.
This chapter brings these associations together in a map-oriented format.

- Varanasi is one of the most important cultural and religious cities on the Ganga.
- Kanpur is a major industrial city on the river and an important location for river-pollution control.
- The Ganga basin includes several important tributaries, including the Ramganga, Gomti, Ghaghara, Gandak, Yamuna and Son systems.
4. The Yamuna: cities, districts and confluences
The Yamuna is the Ganga’s major tributary and forms an important part of western and southern Uttar Pradesh’s physical geography.
| City / district | Yamuna association |
|---|---|
| Saharanpur region | Upper Yamuna basin and western UP drainage |
| Baghpat | Yamuna-side boundary geography |
| Gautam Buddha Nagar | Yamuna and the National Capital Region |

| Banda | Ken–Yamuna confluence region |
| Prayagraj | Yamuna joins the Ganga |
Important tributaries of the Yamuna in the UP region
- Chambal
- Betwa
- Ken
- Sindh
- Hindon
Some tributaries join the Yamuna outside Uttar Pradesh or along its boundary region, so a tributary’s inclusion in the Yamuna system does not mean that its entire course lies within UP.
Key confluences
| Confluence | Location / district association | Importance |
|---|---|---|
| Ganga + Yamuna | Prayagraj | Triveni Sangam |
| Yamuna + Chambal | Pachnada region near the Etawah–Jalaun area | Major river-system association |
| Yamuna + Betwa | Hamirpur region | Important Bundelkhand geography |
| Yamuna + Ken | Banda region | Important southern UP river association |
5. Gomti River: Lucknow, Jaunpur and eastern UP
The Gomti is especially important because it originates within Uttar Pradesh and passes through major urban and agricultural areas.
| Place / district | Gomti association |
|---|---|
| Pilibhit district | Source region |
| Lucknow | State capital on the Gomti |
| Sultanpur | Gomti river system |
| Jaunpur | Gomti-side historic city |
| Ghazipur region | Gomti joins the Ganga in the broader eastern UP region |
Why the Gomti matters
- It is an important river originating in Uttar Pradesh rather than in the Himalayas.
- Lucknow’s urban development and riverfront are closely associated with it.
- Jaunpur is a significant historical city on the Gomti.
- The river is relevant to urban pollution, wastewater management and floodplain geography.
6. Ghaghara / Saryu system: Ayodhya and the eastern plains
The Ghaghara is a major Himalayan river system. The names Ghaghara, Saryu and Sarayu may appear in different geographical, historical and religious contexts. Their usage can vary by reach and tradition, so questions should be interpreted carefully.
| Place / district | River association |
|---|---|
| Ayodhya | Saryu/Sarayu |
| Bahraich region | Ghaghara river system |
| Gonda region | Ghaghara basin and tributary systems |
| Deoria region | Ghaghara river system |
| Ballia region | Eastern UP riverine geography |
Exam facts
- Ayodhya is traditionally associated with the Saryu.
- The Ghaghara system is important for the northern and eastern plains of Uttar Pradesh.
- The river and its tributaries influence flood risk and agriculture in eastern UP.
- The Ghaghara ultimately joins the Ganga in Bihar, outside Uttar Pradesh.
7. Ramganga, Rapti and other important rivers
| River | Important city / district association | Key point |
|---|---|---|
| Ramganga | Moradabad, Bareilly region, Shahjahanpur region | Major Ganga tributary; originates in Uttarakhand |
| Rapti | Gorakhpur | Major eastern UP river; important for flood geography |

| Rihand | Sonbhadra | Important reservoir and power-generation geography |
| Tons | Prayagraj and the Vindhyan region | Important tributary in the southern Ganga system |
| Varuna | Varanasi | Associated with the city’s traditional name, Varanasi |
| Asi | Varanasi | Small river/stream associated with the name Varanasi in traditional explanations |
| Sai | Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh and Jaunpur region | Important river in central-eastern UP |
| Dhasan | Bundelkhand | Tributary of the Betwa system |
| Pahuj | Jhansi region | Bundelkhand drainage system |
River origin: broad categories
For conceptual questions, rivers in Uttar Pradesh can be grouped into three broad origin categories:
- Himalayan rivers: Ganga, Yamuna, Ghaghara, Ramganga, Sharda and Rapti.
- Plains-origin rivers: Gomti, Varuna and Sai.
- Peninsular plateau-origin rivers: Chambal, Betwa, Ken, Son, Tons and Rihand systems.
This classification is a useful simplification for revision. Individual rivers may have complex tributary systems, and some flow through more than one geographical region.
8. Important dams and reservoirs: river–district associations
| Dam / reservoir | District or region | River / watercourse association |
|---|---|---|
| Rihand Dam / Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar | Sonbhadra | Rihand |
| Obra Reservoir / power complex | Sonbhadra | Rihand river system |
| Matatila Dam | Lalitpur region, near the UP–Madhya Pradesh boundary | Betwa |
| Parichha Dam | Jhansi | Betwa |
| Rajghat Dam | Lalitpur–Madhya Pradesh border region | Betwa |
| Maudaha Dam (Swami Brahmanand Dam) | Hamirpur | Bundelkhand water-management system |
| Ahraura Dam | Mirzapur | Garai |
| Bhainsora Dam | Chandauli | Local drainage / Marhwa nala system |
Why these associations matter
- Sonbhadra: Rihand reservoir, thermal power and mineral-energy geography.
- Lalitpur and Jhansi: Betwa river and Bundelkhand water-management projects.
- Hamirpur: Bundelkhand drought-management and reservoir geography.
- Mirzapur: Dams and reservoirs in the Vindhyan landscape.
A dam’s district and the river on which it stands are separate facts. For example, Rihand is the river associated with Rihand Dam; Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar is the reservoir.
9. Important religious and historical sites: place–district–river
| Site | District | River / geographical association |
|---|---|---|
| Kashi Vishwanath and ghats | Varanasi | Ganga |
