Your roll number is in the list of candidates selected for UKPCS interview. First of all, congratulations! How to prepare for UKPCS Lower or UKPCS Upper interview? This will help you to prepare in a structured manner with the right strategy.

 

In general, a Uttarakhand PCS interview preparation should focus on 3 areas:-

  1. Information about self
  2. General Knowledge
  3. Situational and behavioral questions

Apart from those other areas like confidence, communication, and grooming are also important. A detailed discussion follows: –

 

  1. Know the Exam and the examiners:
  • The UKPCS interview happens in Haridwar in the premises of the Uttarakhand Public Service Commission.
  • The interview is usually of 15-35 minutes with average duration of 20-25 minutes. However, duration of interview does not indicate anything. In general, aspirants in the morning slot get more time and, in the afternoon, slot get less time. Sometimes, last aspirant to interview might face the panel at 7-8 PM. Thus, the official timings are not always correct. Keep that in mind and manage expectations accordingly.
  • The purpose of the interview stage is to select the right candidate, not reject you. Thus, the panel makes the aspirants comfortable so that they may get the best out of you. If you are feeling jittery, they will ask simple questions, offer you water etc. Don’t be too comfortable as alertness is also valued. Ultimately, more than the answers, the manner of answering is perhaps more important.
  • Research the previous year’s interview experiences and questions asked to get an idea of the interview process. You can get some idea here. 
  1. Knowledge Enhancement:
  • Brush up on current affairs, both national and international, especially on topics relevant to civil services. Read that day’s newspaper as that remains important.
  • Review important subjects such as Indian polity, governance, economics, history, geography, and social issues. The good thing is that you have already done this in your pre and mains exam.
  • Brush up some basics of your graduation/PG etc. subjects. These may be asked, but it is ok if you are not able to satisfactorily answer these. This may be explained if some time has passed between your graduation and the interview date.
  • Stay updated with recent government policies, initiatives, and significant judicial verdicts.
  • Ultimately, in this area, if you are expert or well-read in some topics, you will be able to steer the conversation in that direction by answering those questions with some interesting tidbit or answering in some detail.
  • It might so happen that in the nervousness of the moment, you are not able to answer a question. Feel free to apologize and attempt next question. It is ok if you are not able to answer a number of questions.
  • Sometimes, interview panel may ask you “What should we ask you?” Do not hesitate and do not be overconfident (Kuch bhi puch lijiye). Be specific and answer with a pre-decided subject/topic that you have mastered. That is your golden chance to shine!

 

  1. Self-Reflection and Awareness:
  • Evaluate your own strengths, weaknesses, and areas of expertise. They usually ask these things.
  • Reflect on your personal and professional experiences, and think about how they relate to the civil services. If you are an engineer, they may ask why you want to join civil services? Be prepared for such questions.
  • Consider your motivations for joining the civil services and be prepared to articulate them effectively. Have ready examples for situations where you found that you could do better, for example.
  • If you have some hobbies, be prepared to answer questions about them. For example, if it is reading books, you should be able to name your favorite authors, their books, latest books you read and what is the points they make. Do not bluff in this area. If you have no hobbies, say so with a justification. However, this section can again help you to steer conversation in your desired direction.

 

  1. Mock Interviews and Practice:

  • Seek feedback from mentors, teachers, or experts to improve your interview performance. Watch the recorded video of you mock to perform better next time.
  • Practice answering a wide range of questions, including those related to your background, current affairs, and ethical dilemmas.
  • More than that, practice how to handle questions you do not know.

 

  1. Effective Communication:
  • Work on your communication skills, including clarity, coherence, and confidence in expressing your thoughts.
  • Practice active listening, maintaining eye contact, and using appropriate body language.
  • Pay attention to your tone, voice modulation, and overall presentation.
  • If you don’t understand a question, seek clarification in mocks as well as actual interview.
  • The language of the interview is conversational Hindi. However, English may also be used. In general, do not expect questions in English.
  • Practice answering questions concisely and avoid rambling or getting off-topic.
  • Be mindful of the time constraints while providing comprehensive and well-rounded answers.

 

  1. Ethics and Integrity:
  • Sometimes, they ask questions regarding situations, much like in the ethics paper.
  • Familiarize yourself with the ethical principles and values expected of civil servants.
  • Reflect on ethical dilemmas faced by civil servants and develop a principled stance.
  • Be prepared to explain your views on maintaining integrity and ethical conduct in public service.
  1. Confidence and Composure:
  • Boost your self-confidence through positive affirmations, visualization, and mental preparation.
  • Learn relaxation techniques to manage interview anxiety and maintain composure. Try breathing in a measured way. This will help you before you enter the room.
  • As you enter the room, ask for permission. They themselves will ask you to sit. Put your file on the table and sit straight. Do not lean on the backrest or the table. Put hands on your knees. Do not shake your legs or make unnecessary movements. Keep eyes on a point slightly above right shoulder of the person asking questions and make frequent eye contact with him/her. Project a calm and composed demeanor throughout the interview process.
  1. Dress and Appearance:
  • Dress professionally and appropriately, adhering to the standard dress code for interviews.
  • Maintain a neat and tidy appearance to make a positive impression on the interview panel.
  • Pay attention to grooming and personal hygiene.
  • Smile often but not overly so.
